An Untouched African Wilderness
Katavi offers very good game viewing and remains virtually unvisited by travelers due to its remoteness. This undeveloped 1,545-square-mile (4,000-km²) park is located between the towns of Mpanda and Sumbawanga on the main road that runs through western Tanzania from north to south. For the safari-goer seeking true isolation, Katavi is a masterpiece of raw nature.
Prolific Wildlife and Birdlife
The wildlife here is diverse and abundant, including hippo, crocs, elephant, zebra, lion, leopard, eland, puku, roan antelope and sable antelope. One of the park's most incredible sights is the herds of several thousand buffalo that are sometimes seen. Additionally, more than 400 species of birds have been recorded within the park’s boundaries.
Geography: Lakes and Floodplains
Lake Katavi and its extensive floodplains are situated in the north of the park, which sits at an altitude of about 2,950 feet (900 m) above sea level. To the southeast lies Lake Chada, which is connected with Lake Katavi by the Katuma River and its extensive swampland. While Miombo woodlands dominate most of the dry areas, beautiful acacia woodlands are found near Lake Chada.
Seasons and Travel Logistics
The long rains in Katavi occur from March to May, while the best time to visit is between July and October. Accessing this remote park is made simple by scheduled charter flights available at least twice a week from Arusha. For added convenience, guests can often be picked up from other airstrips on the “Northern Circuit.”
