A Treasured Island Sanctuary

Located in the southwestern part of Lake Victoria, Rubondo Island is a 93-square-mile (240-km²) haven of biodiversity. This pristine island serves as a wonderful place to relax at the end of a safari, offering a serene atmosphere and unique attractions. The park is comprised of the main island and about a dozen smaller islets, featuring a lush tapestry of habitats including papyrus swamps, savannah, open woodlands, and dense evergreen forests.

"A treasured highlight of any visit is the sighting of the rare sitatunga, which is indigenous to the island's marshy reaches."

The Chimpanzee Habituation Program

Guests may take part in a unique chimpanzee habituation program and view these fascinating primates in the wild. What makes the Rubondo Chimp Habituation experience truly unique is that the colony was established with chimpanzees that were returned to the wild, many after long periods of captivity. This program offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these primates as they thrive in their island home.

Wildlife and Birding Excellence

Because there are no large predators on the island, Rubondo offers a peaceful environment for wildlife to flourish. Visitors may encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, giraffe, bushbuck, and otters. For bird enthusiasts, nearly 400 species have been recorded, including storks, herons, ibises, kingfishers, bee-eaters, and flycatchers, alongside a remarkable abundance of fish eagles.

Exploration and Activities

Walking is allowed and highly encouraged. Visitors, accompanied by a guide who is usually armed, may walk along forested trails in search of wildlife or wait patiently at a number of hides for a close-up encounter. For water-based adventures, there are a few boats available for hire for great fishing and lake exploration. The best times to visit are from July to October and from January to March.

Travel and Access

Access to this remote sanctuary is by scheduled and private air charter—normally departing from airstrips in Serengeti National Park, making it the perfect final stop on a northern Tanzanian circuit.
