Paraa

Paraa is Murchison Falls National Park's tourism hub, located on the banks of the Victoria Nile, a starting point for launch cruises to the bottom of the falls and to the Delta point. There are also a number of lodges in Paraa to include Paraa safari Lodge, Red chilli Rest Camp and Heritage Safari Lodge.

Top of the Falls

The top of Murchison Falls is the most thrilling part of the Park, located 30minutes drive on paved road just west of Sambiya River Lodge. It is here that you will be welcomed by the thundering sound of the Nile River and it forcefully squeezes through a 6m rock gorge to drop 45m down below creating the mighty Murchison falls. The top of the falls can also be accessed from the bottom of the falls, where a boat can leave you to embark on an averagely challenging guided hike to the top via the Fajao Gorge.

Buligi Peninsula

Buligi is Murhison Falls' prime game viewing area, crisscrossed by the Albert, Victoria and Queen game tracks. Comprising of grasslands, savannah wood land and riverine forests, Buligi is bounded by the Victoria Nile flowing into Lake Albert and the Albert Nile flowing out of it. This is a stomping ground for large herds of buffalo, antelopes and giraffe and you might see lions and leopard on a good day.

Kaniyo Papidi Forest

Kaniyo Papidi Forest is located on the souther boundary of Murchison falls and it a popular stop for Murchison falls tours thanks to the habituated chimpanzee family available for chimpanzee tracking excursions. Launch Cruise to the Bottom of Murchison Falls

This boat safari is a 2 hour cruise to the bottom of the Mighty falls which is arguably the main highlight of a Murchison falls National Park Safari. The cruise sails twice daily at 8:30 am and 2:30pm from Paraa near the newly constructed bridge that crosses the Victoria Nile linking the Southern and Northern parts of the park. There are abundant hippos, Buffaloes, elephants and crocodiles along the cruise, thousands of bird species to include fish eagles and if lucky, you might encounter a shoebill.

Top of the Falls Hike

Formerly available for booking but as of 2024, closed off due to the increased water levels, the hike to the top of Murchison falls used to follow after a boat cruise to the bottom of the falls docking at a point afew meters from the falls to take on a beautiful walking trail from down to the top of the falls. Along the way, you would get a clear view of the Uhuru falls. This guided hike by a ranger would take approximately 45minutes and requires a fair level of fitness.

Delta Cruise

This is a another scenic launch cruise in Murchison Falls Uganda but more popular among birders; the cruise takes about 5 hours sailing downstream to the delta where the Nile flows into Lake Albert. The Delta cruise operates once in a day starting at 7am from Paraa and is one of Uganda's promising excursions to seeing a shoebill.

Game Drives

Game drives in Murchison Falls National park offer wildlife sighting  so some of Africa's big five members to include; elephant, lion, buffalo, and leopard. The Buligi area is the best place to embark on game drives, pretty much all wildlife is settled in this area. The signposted Albert, Queen and Victoria tracks offer just about all the park's resident wildlife species with better chances for spotting lions and cheetah. There is very little wildlife in the southern part of the park dissected by the Nile river, driving from Masindi before reaching the Nile River, your might only see as little as baboons, warthogs and a few antelopes.

Chimpanzee Tracking

Chimpanzee tracking in Murchison Falls National Park can be done at Budongo Forest Reserve, a larger tract of tropical forest on the southern fringes of Murchison Falls National Park Uganda. Chimpanzee here have been habituated in Kaniyo Papidi and tracking these primates takes place daily. Walks take 2 to 4 hours on an easy terrain before you see the chimpanzees, spending only one hour with the chimpanzees themselves.

Sport Fishing

Murchison falls Uganda offers a perfect spot for sport fishing, a record Nile perch of 180kg has been caught in the Nile but normal catches range from 20kg to 80kg. Fishing ashore is permitted to Murchison falls safari goers after acquiring a permit but for those seeking the ultimate adventure, taking a boat ride to just below Murchison falls or Karuma Falls offer the best fishing sports.

Nature walks

Murchison falls safari also offers nature walks which are more popular among bird watchers; worthwhile Forest walks that can be half day/ full day excursions are available of Kaniyo Papidi. The four hour walk climbs Papidi Hill from where you can see lake Albert and most of Murchison falls National Park.

Birding Safaris

Murchison falls National Park safari is popular among bird watchers thanks to a wealth of over 451 bird species that have been recorded. Some of these bird species are the albertine Rift endemics such as the red throated bee eater, Piacpiac, silverbird, black headed gonolek and other restricted range species in Kaniyo Papidi including the chocolate backed King fisher, white thigh end hornbill. The Delta cruises offers more birdwatching opportunities and you might encounter the shoe bill in the swampy delta point.

Murchison Falls Uganda is host to a whopping 144 species of mammals and 451 species of birds. Easiest wildlife sightings are along the river banks, regular visitors include; elephants, hippos, Buffaloes and Nile crocodiles. Predators in the park include; lions, leopard, jackals, serval cats, and spotted hyenas. Grazers include; antelopes, giraffe, Jackson's Hartebeests, water bucks, oribi, reedbucks, warthogs, grey duiker and bushbacks. Primates include; chimpanzees, vervet monkeys, olive baboons, patas monkey, black and white Columbus monkey, red tailed monkey, and blue monkey. Other smaller species include porcupines, mongoose, Honey Badger, genets and aardvark

Park Entry Fees 2024 -2025

As of 2024, the park entrance fees to Murchison Falls Uganda is USD 45 per Adult and USD 25 per child aged 5 - 15 yrs old for Foreign non residents. East African Resident visitors are charged UGX 25,000 per adult and children aged 5-15 years old pay UGX 10,000. Foreign Residents pay USD 35 per Adult and USD 15 per child aged 5 - 15 years old. Park entry fee for Murchison Falls tours is valid for 24 hours and this fee allows for game drives in the park, but expect to pay other fees for boat safaris, nature walks and other activities of your interest..

Weather

Murchison Falls National Park has a tropical climate like most of Africa, with two distinct seasons; the dry season wet season. During the dry season in June to September and January to March, temperature rises upto 32 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest regions in Uganda, Nights are cooler and in the wet season, temperatures can drop to 18 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is scarce in the dry season but when it rains in the wet months, it is normally heavy down pours with storms.

 

Getting There

Murchison falls Uganda can be accessed both by road via alternative routes to the Southern or northern parts of the park and by air (light craft).

By Road

Traveling for Murchison falls National Park by road driver is a 5 - 6 drive. Two routes destined for the Southern part of the Park lead to Paraa via Budongo Forest from Masindi town, the direct route enters the park via Kichumbanyobo Gate, 16km from Masindi and the longer but scenic route heads west of Lake Albert entering the park via Bugungu Gate to access Paraa. To the northern part of the park, there is an alternative route via Pakwach to cross the Nile at Karuma falls then enter Murchison Falls National Park via Chobe, Wankwar or Tangi Gate. These gates are convenient for visitors connecting to Kidepo Valley National Park.

By Air

Murchison Falls Uganda has can be access by air through Pakuba Airstrip, Bugungu Airstrip or Chobe Airstrip with light craft flight.

Safari in Uganda Murchison falls offers two options for a boat safari; the cruise to the bottom of the falls and the a Delta cruise to the swampy delta where the Nile empties in Lake Albert. The Boat ride to the bottom of the falls sails from Paraa and takes upto 3.5 hours whereas the delta boat safari that also sails from Paraa takes upto 5 hours.

Murchison falls National Park once had rhinos during the 1960's before poachers and troops wiped them out. Presently, there are no rhinos in the park but rather in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, a private 70 sq.km reserve that was setup to conserve the endangered black and white rhinos in Uganda. It is possible to add a visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary as part of your Murchison Falls Safari. Seeing the rhinos involves tracking them on foot guided by a ranger who is also your guide.
