Safari Overview
Experience a transformative journey into the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site and sanctuary to nearly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. This 127-square-mile ancient wilderness is a “Tarzan-like” paradise, characterized by its tangled floor of giant ferns and 400 unique plant species. Our 3 day gorilla trekking safari Uganda is meticulously designed for the discerning traveler seeking a guaranteed encounter with these charismatic giants in their natural habitat. To ensure the highest level of comfort, we prioritize the Buhoma and Rushaga sectors, which host the region’s most prestigious luxury lodges.
Quick Planning Guide
- A successful trek requires specialized logistics. The 2026 permit fee is currently $800 USD for Foreign Non-Residents, which grants you access to a strictly limited group of just eight guests per gorilla family. Are you on a budget? Ask us about the newly introduced low season discounted gorilla permits priced at $600. While the terrain is moderate to strenuous—with altitudes ranging from 3,800 to over 6,500 feet—the success rate of seeing the gentle giants on this 3 day gorilla tour exceeds 98% because dedicated park scouts begin tracking the gorillas' nests at the break of dawn.
Itinerary
Your expedition begins at 7:00 AM, where your private guide will meet you at your residence or hotel in either Entebbe or Kigali. If you choose our 3 days Uganda gorilla safari through the Entebbe route, you will enjoy a scenic 9-hour traverse, including a curated stop at the Equator Crossing for refreshments and photography and Igongo Cultural Center for Lunch. Travelers opting for our 3 day gorilla safari Rwanda via the Kigali route will enjoy a sophisticated 4-hour transfer across the Cyanika or Katuna border, offering breathtaking vistas of the Virunga Volcanoes. By late afternoon, you will arrive at your booked lodge in Bwindi to enjoy relaxation or an optional sundowner overlooking the forest canopy, allowing your body time to adjust to the altitude before the morning’s trek.
Following a gourmet breakfast, the day begins at the park headquarters for an 8:00 AM briefing. You will be assigned to one of the 19 habituated family groups, such as the renowned Rushegura or Mubare families, before plunging into the "Impenetrable" forest. Led by a lead ranger and armed trackers, the hike can last anywhere from one to four hours as you navigate the ancient, primary forest.
Once the group is located, you will spend an unforgettable hour observing the gorillas from a respectful distance of 22 feet. This is a rare opportunity to witness the silverback’s quiet dominance and the playful, human-like antics of the juveniles. To enhance your experience and support local conservation, we recommend the assistance of a local porter, whose "heroic" support on the muddy slopes is invaluable. Your day concludes with the presentation of your official trekking certificate and a celebratory dinner back at the Lodge
After enjoying a final breakfast overlooking the mist-shrouded canopy, you will begin your return journey. Those heading toward Entebbe will enjoy a full day’s drive through the vibrant Ugandan countryside, arriving in time for an evening international flight. For a more time-efficient departure, the Kigali route offers a short, comfortable drive back to Rwanda, ideal for those with midday schedules. For the ultimate luxury experience or convenience, ask us about the Fly-in Safari upgrade to Kihihi or Kisoro Airstrip, which bypasses the road transfer and provides a swift return to Entebbe with stunning aerial views of the Albertine Rift.

FAQs
Bwindi is a “tangled” jungle with steep hills and deep gullies. The search takes you to altitudes ranging from 3,800 to over 6,500 feet ($1,160$ to $1,982$ meters). While the pace is slow and steady, you should be in good physical condition as you may need to navigate muddy slopes by holding onto vines and bamboo.
Accommodation in Bwindi is strategically selected based on which gorilla family you are tracking. To ensure you reach the park headquarters by the 8:00 AM briefing, we utilize premier lodges in two main sectors:
-
The Northern Sector (Buhoma): This is the most established area and home to several iconic luxury options. Gorilla Forest Camp is a standout choice, featuring permanent luxury tents just five minutes from the park base; gorilla families have even been known to wander through the camp grounds. Other top-tier options include Buhoma Lodge, which offers private spa treatments for post-trek recovery, and Mahogany Springs Lodge, famous for its two-bedroom Presidential Suite and its namesake mahogany tree naturally shaped like the continent of Africa. For a classic feel, Bwindi Lodge offers stone bandas with stunning views from its elevated wooden decks.
-
The Southern Sector (Nkuringo/Rushaga): For those seeking a high-altitude experience, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is Uganda’s highest lodge. It offers an ultra-luxury stay in stone cottages with dedicated butler service and cozy fireplaces. If you are tracking in the Rushaga area, Gorilla Safari Lodge provides comfortable, family-friendly cottages situated right on the edge of the Impenetrable Forest, ensuring you are only steps away from the start of your adventure.
Another aspect of our 3 Day gorilla trekking Uganda that makes it unique and meaningful is the opportunity to engage in a cultural tour visiting the Batwa community. The Batwa are indigenous people who used to live in harmony with the gorillas in the forests. They were hunter-gatherers who relied on the forest for their food, shelter, medicine, and spirituality. However, they were evicted from their ancestral lands when the national parks were gazetted to protect the gorillas. Today, they live in marginalized conditions and struggle to preserve their culture and identity. You can visit them as part of the optional activities we offer on this 3 days Uganda gorilla safari and learn about their history, traditions, and customs, witness their skills in making crafts, music, and dance.
To ensure the safety of both humans and primates on this 3 day gorilla trekking safari, guests must follow these rules:
-
Distance: Maintain a minimum of 22 feet (7 meters) at all times.
-
Eye Contact: Never make direct eye contact with a silverback; if he approaches, take a submissive, squatting posture.
-
Health: If you are feeling ill (even a common cold), you will not be allowed to trek, as gorillas are highly susceptible to human communicable diseases.
-
Photography: Flash is strictly prohibited. Set your ISO to 400 or higher to account for the deep forest shade.
To prepare for this 3 day gorilla trek Uganda, you should pack appropriately for the weather and terrain, some of the items to pack include; hiking shoes or boots, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, a rain jacket or poncho, a hat or cap, gloves, binoculars, a camera, extra batteries, and memory cards.

Bwindi is a true rainforest, meaning the environment is dynamic and unpredictable. Mornings are almost always cool and misty, creating a beautiful but damp atmosphere. It is important to note that even on days when it does not rain, you will likely get wet while navigating the “tangled” undergrowth and crawling through damp vegetation.
The forest also experiences high humidity, which is why we recommend wearing breathable, waterproof fabrics like Gore-Tex. Because of the cool mountain air and the presence of stinging nettles along the trails, we advise all guests to wear long trousers and leather gloves. This ensures you remain comfortable and protected while focused on the incredible experience of the trek.
